The Rhinoplasty Consultation

The Consultation Process

The rhinoplasty consultation is an extremely important part of the surgical process.  It begins with the patient personally describing what specific aspects of the nose they want addressed.  All of their concerns about appearance should be mentioned including size, width, shape and orientation.  Dr. Hubbard will inquire if there is more concern with the view from the front or the side.  Some patients find it easier to describe their concerns using a mirror or double mirror.  There should always be mention of any breathing difficulty.

Dr. Hubbard then performs a careful exam of the external nose looking from the front, side and 45 degree views.  The internal exam will be done paying particular attention to deformities of the septum, internal valve and turbinates.  After the exam, a thorough discussion begins of surgical options.  Video imaging is available for patients and can provide valuable insight and immediate feedback on what outcomes can reasonably be expected from the decisions made prior to surgery.  Dr. Hubbard is frank and realistic about the experience of this type of surgery including expectations and recovery.  No two rhinoplasties are exactly the same and so the surgical plan will be unique for every patient.  Nasal shape, breathing ability and rhinoplasty goals need to be established individually during each consultation process.
