Long or Droopy Nose

The most attractive noses are turned up a very small amount. The lower part of the nose creates an angle with the upper lip and this should be greater than 90 degrees. In some men it may be acceptable to be right at 90 degrees, but in most individuals and especially in women it should be turned upward slightly or a more aged appearance will result. A tip that points downwards towards the floor can result from prior trauma, inheritance, old techniques of rhinoplasty, and aging. There are a variety of techniques that nicely turn the nose upward shortening the nose a reasonably conservative amount. This amount should be appropriate for the patient's sex, age, and height. Consequences of turning the nose up this small amount are discussed in the consultation. These are issues such as more nostril will be seen from the front view and more of the lip will be seen from the front view. Video imaging can be a very useful tool in looking at the potential shape of a long or droopy nose with such shortening procedures. On occasion, shortening a nose with droopy tip can improve breathing.
